Uniper and ConocoPhillips have extended their long-term gas deal to include the supply of up to ten billion cubic meters (bcm) of natural gas over the next ten years.
Major U.S. states to supply natural gas to Germany’s Uniper in northwest Europe as it taps into its existing pipeline and growing liquefied natural gas reserves (LNG), the companies disclosed in a joint statement.
The statement added that ConocoPhillips and Uniper “have had a strong energy partnership spanning decades. [and] the extension of this relationship continues the successful cooperation between the partners”.
According to several US media sources, this deal is directly related to pipeline gas and not LNG, despite the fact that LNG is mentioned in the official statement.
Uniper recently warned that Germany needs to issue new tenders for gas-fired power plants if the nation wants to finally phase out coal plants, which are due to be completed by the end of the decade.
Germany accounts for 0.1% of global natural gas production, with the world’s largest producers being the US, Russia and Iran.
